Program Mission: The Media Lab enables artists and students to learn about and work with computer-based graphic design and audio-video content production tools. It also serves as a general-use computer lab for individual project work and student school work.

History: The Media Lab was created from equipment donated by volunteers and purchased with funds obtained from grants written for other parts of CELLspace. While not currently active, in the past the Media Lab cluster produced many video documentaries of activities in CELLspace, including a monthly television program that was shown on one of San Francisco's local cable-access channels.

Current Projects & Resources:The Media Lab carries a full schedule of weekly classes in animation, graphic design, video editing, stencil-art making, web design, still photo editing, and music mixing and production. In addition the Lab has scheduled open hours for general educational use by students, and occasional movie screenings on its 8-foot projection screen.

The Lab has 6 student and 1 instructor workstations in the lab, all Macs with G4-class processors and adequte RAM and disk space for multimedia work, hosted on a gigabit-ethernet LAN with access to a file server for project storage. A high-quality LCD projector is available for regular use by Lab instructors and for movie screenings. On the video production side the Lab has two Canon GL1 video cameras and an older high-quality SVHS format camera, tripods, microphones, MiniDV/DVCam/VHS editing decks, and assorted video monitors. Audio equipment includes M-Box USB audio in/out boxes, a high-quality multi-channel mixing board, and wall-mounted monitoring speakers.

Past Projects:

  • Monthly cable-access television program about CELLspace and the surrounding neighborhood
